Rural Scotland

Under this SNP Government, rural communities are being left behind.

Hundreds of thousands of people live and work in rural Scotland but far too often their concerns are neglected by the SNP Government in Edinburgh. People in rural areas are held back by poor infrastructure and a lack of housing, services and investment.

Agriculture is the backbone of rural Scotland, yet farmers have been left in the dark by the SNP over the future of farm payments. The SNP keep stalling on a new system for farmers. The Scottish Conservatives would act quickly to support farmers as they deliver quality Scottish produce.

The cost of rural crime has more than doubled since 2017. To address this, we would improve the reporting and recording of rural crime so that it is treated with the importance it deserves.

We would cut down on fly tipping, which plagues rural areas. The Scottish Conservatives are bringing forward a Member’s Bill in the Scottish Parliament to increase fines and fixed penalties.

Improving infrastructure is an essential part of creating sustainable rural communities. We would double investment in the Rural Housing Fund and ensure that a rollout of full fibre broadband starts in rural areas first, so that they are not left behind.
