Outdoor Education Bill

The Scottish Conservatives recognise that outdoor residential experiences enrich the lives of young people. They provide them with a knowledge and appreciation of environments and communities other than those with which they are most familiar, and they help build confidence and self-esteem.

It is important that young people from deprived backgrounds can access the same experience as their peers. Evidence shows that the benefits of outdoor education are particularly strong for the most disadvantaged children, who are currently the most likely to miss out.

The Outdoor Education Bill proposes new legislation to ensure that all young people between 12 and 16 have the chance to take part in a residential outdoor education lasting at least four night and five days. Brought forward by Scottish Conservative MSP Liz Smith, the Bill has now passed Stage 1 in the Scottish Parliament, marking an important step toward embedding outdoor learning in the education system.
