COP26

The United Kingdom is a world leader when it comes to combating climate change. As the host of COP26, it will set the example for other nations.

The UK has a lot to be proud of when it comes to acting on climate change. The UK is the second-highest performing country in the Climate Change Performance Index, while between 1990 and 2019, the UK achieved record clean growth. Over this time, our economy grew by 78% while our emissions decreased by 44%, the fastest decline in the G7. The UK was the first major economy to put into law targets to reach Net 0 by 2050.

COP26 shows the importance of the Union. All four countries will be provided with an opportunity to showcase their work on climate change. Only while working with each-other can we reach our targets.

The UK Government will provide almost £100m to Scotland for COP26. The Cabinet Office has agreed to pay at least £87m to cover the costs of staging the conference and to help health and emergency services cope with the additional pressure caused by up to 30,000 visitors.

While the UK Government will be able to showcase its work in tackling climate change to the rest of the world, the SNP have fallen short of their climate targets. The SNP have missed their legal emissions targets three times in a row while the Climate Emergency Response Group noted that over two-thirds of key climate policies are not on track. At the same time, the Scottish Government has backtracked on key promises such as a publicly owned energy company and risks delaying their deposit return scheme.

The SNP mismanagement of ScotRail has led to ScotRail workers to strike throughout COP26. This is a time in which the use of public transport should be encouraged. Without vital rail services people will be unable to attend the conference and might result to the use of the private car.

In SNP-run-Glasgow, bin workers have also decided to go on strike during COP26. At a time when the Queen, Joe Biden, and many other world leaders and participants will be visiting Glasgow, the streets will be filled with rubbish. This is a result of SNP incompetence.
