Constitution and Democracy

The SNP constantly play constitutional games and refuse to respect the result of referendums.

In their time in government, the SNP have run roughshod over Scotland’s democracy.

In the run up to the election in May 2021 our democratic institutions were exposed as being weak and unable to hold the SNP Government to account.

The SNP have never respected the result of the 2014 or 2016 referendums. The SNP have spent every minute since 2014 demanding another independence referendum.

The SNP are letting some of the worst criminals vote. For the first time ever, in the 2021 Holyrood election, the SNP gave convicted criminals the right to vote – it was only the Scottish Conservatives who stood against it and we will continue to oppose prisoner voting. Criminals were given another opportunity to vote in the 2022 local council elections.

The Scottish Conservatives believe in efficient government, not costly politics. But as a result of the SNP-Green nationalist coalition, the Scottish Government is the largest it has ever been. We would reduce the size of the government back to 2007 levels with just six cabinet members, instead of the ten there are now. Politicians must also lead by example, so the Scottish Conservatives will support a freeze in MSP and ministerial pay for the next five years.
