Russell Findlay waits tables in Swinney’s backyard

John Swinney has been accused of being “out of touch” after choosing to headline an independence rally on the very first weekend of the election campaign.

The SNP leader, who spoke at the event in Edinburgh, said he has a secret plan for another referendum if his party win a majority on May 7, and that the “prize” of independence is up for grabs.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said this exposes John Swinney’s “warped” priorities.

Findlay, who spent the day waiting tables at a restaurant in Swinney’s constituency, said the election should be about the real issues, like the cost-of-living and the plight facing Scottish hospitality businesses.

At the restaurant in Perthshire, Russell spoke to local customers and staff about the Scottish Conservatives’ plans to cut business rates and support the hospitality sector.

He warned that if the SNP win the Holyrood election, John Swinney’s only priority will be another divisive independence referendum.

The Scottish Conservative leader said that, just like in 2016 and 2021, Scots can stop an SNP majority by voting for the Scottish Conservatives on their peach ballot, adding that this is their “secret weapon” to protect the Union.
