The SNP’s benefits bill is out of control

The SNP’s ballooning welfare spending is unsustainable and unfair to hard-working Scots who are being hit with ever-rising tax bills to pay for it.

According to Social Security Scotland, the benefits agency created by the SNP, the number of people receiving Adult Disability Payment is expected to reach 750,000 by 2030.

Official figures also show the number of ADP claimants has risen by almost 15 per cent in the last year alone, putting Scotland on course for a benefits bill that could hit £10 billion a year.

This comes at the same time as families are paying higher taxes and public services continue to struggle.

Despite this, John Swinney continues to defend the SNP’s light-touch system, even as warnings grow about rising costs and abuse of the system.

The Scottish Conservatives believe the current approach is unfair to taxpayers and risks undermining support for those who genuinely need help.

We would take a different approach by cracking down on fraud, making sure the system supports those in real need, and helping more people who are able to work back into employment.

That would allow us to lower the tax burden on households and deliver a fairer, more affordable benefits system for Scotland.

At the election on May 7, the only way to stop the SNP continuing with higher taxes and an unsustainable benefits bill is to vote Scottish Conservative on your peach ballot paper.

No matter where you live in Scotland, the smart way to deny the SNP a majority and force a change of direction is to back the Scottish Conservatives on the regional list.
