John Swinney has been accused of wasting taxpayers’ money on his obsession with breaking up the United Kingdom after he launched another “fantasy” paper on independence.
At First Minister’s Questions, Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said Swinney’s plans would mean extreme tax rises and severe spending cuts.
Findlay referenced leading economist Professor Ronald MacDonald who described the SNP leader’s proposals as “totally shambolic” and added that the SNP’s currency position would impact on public sector wages, pensions, mortgages and borrowing costs for households and businesses.
Findlay added that Swinney’s paper should be in the “fantasy section”, and that it’s not just harmless fantasy – but “dangerous dishonesty”.
He also cited a survey this week, which showed that public trust in the SNP government is at an all-time low.
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: “John Swinney can’t offer a fresh start – he’s a tired nationalist with a dismal record.
“He was Nicola Sturgeon’s and Alex Salmond’s right-hand man, up to his neck in every SNP scandal, from the ferries fiasco, gender self-ID, SQA exams, Named Persons and more.
“His fantasy independence paper would mean extreme tax rises and severe spending cuts, which would make Scots poorer.
“Leading economists have said his plans are totally shambolic and would impact on public sector wages, pensions, mortgages and borrowing costs – for households and businesses.
“It’s no wonder public trust in the SNP government is at an all-time low.
“He’s not focused on building a stronger economy for the future. He’s wasting time and taxpayers’ money on the same old arguments of the past.
“For the sake of Scotland, he should give up his independence obsession and move on.”
