We believe that Scotland enjoys great benefits from being part of the United Kingdom. In many ways, we Scots have the best of both worlds. Our devolved, Scottish Parliament has control over crucial issues like healthcare, housing, crime and childcare. Nonetheless, we are part of a country, the UK, which has huge worldwide influence in bodies like the EU, NATO and on the UN Security Council. Without the Union, we could only dream of such status.
However, Scotland’s political debate is far too centred around the Union, and the constitutional debate. Labour patronises and belittles Scots by saying that we’re not good enough to be independent. On the contrary, for centuries Scots have shown ourselves to be an ingenious bunch, and have given the world far more than we’ve taken in return. On the other hand, the Nationalists blame all of Scotland’s ills on the English, and pretend that suddenly, with independence, all would be rosy in Scotland’s garden. Both are utterly wrong.
Scots are disappointed in the performance of devolution. But they don’t want a new country. They simply want a new government. A government which will make them proud of their Scottish Parliament, where the Lib-Lab Pact has made them ashamed.
The Nationalists and Labour both want this election to be about divorce from the Union. But this election is not about divorce. It is about delivery.
Scottish Conservatives will deliver on the issues that matter most to the people of Scotland. Scottish Conservatives are Your Voice in Parliament.
