Scanlon calls for more answers on implications of Licensing Act on distilleries and whisky shops
20/11/2008
Mary Scanlon, Scottish Conservative MSP for the Highlands and Islands, has today submitted further questions to the Scottish Government seeking clarification on the impact the forthcoming Licensing Act will have on distilleries and whisky shops.
Commenting, Mary said.
"The Highlands and particularly Moray are world renowned for the whisky they produce and there is a genuine fear that the proposals in this Act could be damaging to the industry. Not only does the whisky industry contribute to local economies through employment or transport, it is a major player in the tourism industry.
"Moray has the largest number of distilleries in any constituency in Scotland. In Orkney we have Highland Park distillery which I visited during the recent recess and heard first hand the concerns operators have about the proposed legislation. Throughout the Highlands companies are contacting me for reassurances that the new Act will not mean a restriction to their trade.
"The questions I have submitted are intended provide clarity over aspects of the new act. All parties agree that something must be done to tackle alcohol abuse, but that should not be to the detriment of our distilleries in the Highlands who do so much to promote Scotland on a World stage and are a boost to the local and National economy."
