Goldie backs SCC assault on LIT

Commenting as she attended the Scottish Chamber of Commerce’s 60th Anniversary Annual Dinner at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, where Norman Quirk (SCC Chairman) labelled the Scottish Government’s plans to introduce a local income tax as ‘positively spine chilling’, Annabel Goldie MSP, Scottish Conservative Leader, said:
“Norman Quirk and the SCC are making a compelling case against LIT. They are right to publicise the deep concerns of the business community and they deserve credit for standing up against this unfair, unworkable and now totally discredited tax on jobs from the SNP.
“It is a policy built on shifting sands and in the consultation it has been comprehensively rubbished. In the current economic climate, Alex Salmond has either got a bigger hole in his finances or a bigger tax bombshell for the people. Instead, LIT should simply be ditched.
“Last week the First Minister was able to admit to me that, in these unprecedented times, a freeze in council tax was not enough. That is why he must adopt Scottish Conservative policy of a cut in council tax for every household across Scotland. That would be real help in these tough economic times. When will he do it?”
