A joint statement released today has revealed that Dundee University, Abertay University and Dundee College shall not merge. A joint comment by the three establishments and the Scottish Funding Council confirmed the news.
Scottish Conservative Education Spokesperson, Liz Smith MSP said:
"I very much welcome the fact that the three institutions will remain independent and that this is a mutually agreed position shared also by the Scottish Funding Council. There were clear concerns that the three institutions were being too heavily pressurised by the Scottish Government to consider a full blown merger when this did not suit their distinctive positions and different specialisations.
"University and college autonomy is a very important principle underpinning both the further and higher education sectors and that must be maintained even if there are compelling arguments for greater collaboration across different courses and projects."
