The Christie Commission has confirmed there has been no noticeable improvement in educational attainment since devolution, despite extra spending.

Liz Smith MSP, Scottish Conservative Education Spokesperson, said:

"The Christie Commission sends a very clear signal that there has been no noticeable improvement in educational attainment despite the very substantial extra funding which has been spent on our schools.

"Scottish Conservatives have long been arguing that improvement in educational attainment will not come about by throwing more money at the system. Instead, we need a radical overhaul of how resources are deployed and far more power invested in the hands of headteachers.

"As Campbell Chrisite says we have been suffering for far too long from a system which is top down when services are provided to individuals rather than for individuals. Our schools have been in the front line of this failure and it's time for change so that we improve the educational opportunities for all our children and especially those in the lower 20% group where attainment levels have not changed at all since devolution."
