SVR row: Salmond admits he knew of lapse in 2007

At FMQs today, Alex Salmond admitted to Annabel Goldie that he had been told about the situation with the Scottish Variable Rate in May 2007, and was therefore at the forefront of a cover up.

Annabel Goldie MSP, Scottish Conservative Leader, said:

“Mr Swinney was first bruised and then humbled by this parliament yesterday, quite correctly conceding – eventually – that he had got it wrong; made errors of judgement; had represented himself and his Government in a very poor light, and he apologised to this Parliament.

“But now we know he had an accomplice. The First Minister today admitted he was told in May 2007 about the SVR and orchestrated a cover up – a collective irresponsibility – a concerted effort, to hide the truth from this Parliament and from the people of Scotland. What a shocking state of affairs.

“This whole sorry saga has scarred the SNP and eroded trust in the SNP Scottish Government.”
