The SNP's business convenor Derek Mackay has stated he expects "a referendum on Scotland's future towards the end of this Parliament". This pushes the prospective date even further back to late in 2015 or even early in 2016.
Scottish Conservative Constitution Spokesman, David McLetchie MSP said:
"Scotland needs to start concentrating on its future and it is impossible to do this while the prospect of independence hangs above us. The SNP spent years as a minority demanding a referendum, yet when they are presented with the opportunity to deliver one they delay and postpone.
"With the SNP now destined to wait until late 2015 or even early 2016, Scotland is left waiting for a definitive answer. We simply cannot afford such a long period of uncertainty and the SNP must move forward with this debate now. They need to stop stalling, set a date and set a question as so we can move away from Alex Salmond's independence agenda and start concentrating on what Scotland needs."
The SNP issued a release entitled 'TIME TO BUILD THE "INDEPENDENCE GENERATION" in which their Business Convenor Derek Mackay discussed building the Party's membership. In it he is quoted as saying:
"With a referendum on Scotland's future toward the end of this parliament we all have a stake in building a better Scotland..."
The Scottish Government originally stated that they planned to hold the referendum in the second half of the five-year parliament. They are now stating that it will be even later, pushing the date back to late 2015 or even 2016
