A study by the Scottish Social Attitudes Survey has shown that 65% of people would vote for independence if it would result in them being better off financially, while only 21% would vote in favour if it meant they would be worse off.
Commenting on the poll, Scottish Conservative Constitution Spokesman, David McLetchie MSP said:
"This is just one of many polls that shows support for independence is still relatively low. The level of support is still down on what it has been previously, and the SNP should not get ahead of themselves. Respondents were equally willing to vote against independence if it meant they would be worse off financially.
"These polls are all very well and good, but there is only one that matters - we need to take this issue to Scots now and settle this argument once and for all. The SNP need to set a date and set a question, so we can stop concentrating on Alex Salmond's separatist agenda and start focusing on what Scotland needs."
