The Institution of Civil Engineers has called for the Scottish Government to use a greater mix of energy sources to deal with the immediate energy challenge facing Scotland.
They noted that with the timescales involved in progressing new technologies, Scotland cannot rely solely on renewable energy sources to keep the lights on. They also added that more needed to be done to realise the huge potential of marine power.
Scottish Conservative Energy Spokesperson, Mary Scanlon MSP said:
"This call from the Institute of Civil Engineers echoes what we have been saying for years – that Scotland requires a balanced energy policy. While onshore renewables are undoubtedly a significant source of energy, they should not be pursued to the detriment of other low carbon sources of energy.
"The Scottish Government are so focussed on wind farms, they are not fully supporting and harnessing the potential opportunities of Scotland's natural resources of marine power. I hope that the First Minister will take heed of the Institute of Civil Engineers' call for leadership in developing marine power in Scotland's unique natural environment to realise Scotland's massive energy potential.
"Although the wind doesn't blow all the time, nor does the sun shine, we can predict that 'nae man can tether time nor tide.'"
