Scottish Conservatives have called on the SNP to enact another tranche of the Town Centre Regeneration fund. It comes after a report into the High Street by Mary Portas stated that urgent action was needed to stop the death of our high street, and as shoppers begin to return to the shops after Christmas.
Scottish Conservative Enterprise Spokesperson, Mary Scanlon MSP said:
"These are tough times for our High Street retailers, with many reporting decreasing sales and rising costs. After the report Mary 'Queen of Shops' Portas found that a third of our High Streets are either degenerating or failing it is clear we must do something to entice shoppers back into our town and city centres.
"That is why Scottish Conservatives are calling for another round of the Town Centre Regeneration fund to be introduced. This will once again allow local communities to bid for funding to rejuvenate their High Streets, improve local amenities and help businesses flourish.
"This is something the SNP can enact immediately and it is in their power to do so. Instead of complaining about the powers they don't have they should start using the considerable powers they already have at their disposal. They have backed this measure in the past and if they want to help Scotland's High Streets they must do so again."
