The SNP must admit the truth on the future of higher education funding and stop conning students. They have hit out today following former Labour MSP Des McNulty's comments on his party's u-turn before the election.
Liz Smith MSP, Scottish Conservative Education Spokesperson, said:
"We all want higher education to flourish in Scotland, and to widen access for students studying in our country.
"That is why our proposals for a graduate contribution, paid from future earnings and at an affordable rate will mean that Scotland's universities can retain their excellence, retain their student numbers and most crucially can boost bursary support for students from poorer backgrounds by £55 million a year.
"The SNP need to stop living in fantasy world and stop conning students. Despite all the evidence, they still refuse to find the money needed to bridge the real funding gap. They are threatening our Universities' standing, threatening up to 13,000 student places and are out of tune with public opinion.
"In a perfect world everything would be free. But in the real world, voters accept that the costs have to be spread. It is the only way to safeguard higher education – the SNP know this, but will not admit it."
