Official figures published today by the Scottish Government show that retail sales in Scotland at basic and current prices fell by 0.3% and 0.6% respectively.
Commenting on the figures, Gavin Brown MSP said:
"These statistics are worrying for the retail industry and show that retail sales are going in the wrong direction. What is clear is that if we are to support the retail industry the SNP must abandon the Scottish retail levy on them.
"It is a policy that has involved no consultation, no business and regulatory impact assessment and no investigation into how many jobs it will cost. When these figures show that we need to give a boost to retail sales it is bizarre that the SNP would even consider introducing this measure.
"When the retail industry most needs a helping hand they're receiving a kick in the teeth. The SNP must now shelve their retail tax proposal."
