SNP are all at sea on UK defence contracts

The Finance Secretary has today claimed that British warships would still be built in a separate Scotland.

Murdo Fraser MSP, Scottish Conservative Deputy Leader, said:

"John Swinney is talking absolute drivel.

"Scottish shipbuilding has benefited hugely from our membership of the United Kingdom. The recent UK Government investment in Scottish shipbuilding with the two aircraft carrier orders has safeguarded many jobs and is a real boost to our economy. It is one of many positive outcomes from the Union.

"For the SNP to say that in the event of separation, the English Government would continue to place orders for naval vessels with Scottish yards, when the capability exists to build these elsewhere in the UK, is absolute nonsense. It is inconceivable that English politicians would tolerate the loss of orders and jobs from their own country to what would be a foreign nation.

"The SNP's claims are the stuff of fantasy. The sooner we can have their referendum so all their ludicrous assertions can be exposed, the better."
