Smith welcomes McCormac Review – Are SNP brave enough to adopt recommendations?

The McCormac Review into the working conditions of teachers has been published today.

Liz Smith MSP, Scottish Conservative Education Spokesperson, said:

"I warmly welcome this report which I believe has provided a very thorough analysis of the main challenges facing the teaching profession. The recent Donaldson Report made clear just how much the teaching profession will have to adapt in the years ahead and why, a decade on, there is a need to review the McCrone settlement.

"In particular, I welcome the recommendations that there should be greater flexibility within individual schools when it comes to setting teachers' terms and conditions. This means headteachers will have greater say in the running of their own schools and this is very welcome news to the Scottish Conservatives.

"It is clear that good teachers and well run schools don't need a plethora of rules and regulations. People will be very upset if unions use these findings to create trouble and disrupt the education of children all across Scotland.

"This is a real test of the SNP's mettle. Will they cave in to union pressure or will they put children and their parents first?"
