The man who speaks for the SNP in Europe, Alyn Smith MEP, has today confirmed that SNP policy is to join the Euro. Speaking on Good Morning Scotland he said it is "not the case" that the UK position would be worse if it was in the euro.
When asked if the SNP still wants the euro for Scotland, he said: "Give it six months and I think you will find the UK sinking a lot faster than the Eurozone is. The Eurozone is getting its act together.
"This deal tonight has been good news for the Eurozone, good news for the EU and it's appalling news for the UK and us (Scotland) with it."
David McLetchie MSP, Scottish Conservative spokesman on the Constitution said:
"Alyn Smith has confirmed the worst kept secret in Scottish politics. Alex Salmond and the SNP are the Euro's biggest cheerleaders.
"The SNP would march an independent Scotland into full Euro membership. They would give away control over interest rates to Bonn, control over financial services to Brussels and land Scotland with a multi-billion Euro headache.
"By contrast, the stance taken by our Prime Minister has been good for Scotland and good for Britain.
"The cost of independence is becoming clear. As every day passes, more and more people can see that Scotland is better off in Britain."
