The Scottish Fishing Federation (SFF) has supported David Cameron's decision to reject closer ties with the European Union. They also dismissed Alex Salmond's suggestion that the fishing industry will be damaged by the decision.
Bertie Armstrong, the Chief Executive of the SFF said that "we wish not for appeasement but, where necessary, to take a stand".
Leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Ruth Davidson said:
"This is just further proof that Alex Salmond is on the wrong side of this argument. The SFF is speaking on behalf of all of our fisherman who are delighted that the Prime Minister has stood up for all of Scotland and the UK. By using the veto he has sent out a strong message that we will defend our interests and not simply give control over to Europe.
"Alex Salmond would have signed away our sovereignty in a second and his bluster about the effect this could have on Scotland is being torn to shreds. The SFF openly state that this would have no negative impact on the fisheries negotiations and that it has in fact put us on a better footing.
"Two thirds of Scots back Cameron's use of the veto and it's about time that Alex Salmond got on board. He has seriously misjudged the mood of the country and the longer he moans about this decision the more embarrassment he is causing for himself."
