Scottish Conservatives have today posted a warning to the next Holyrood Parliament that we will not support any budget which raises Council Tax in 2012/13, thus extending the tax freeze to 5 years.
We are also proposing that any future increase above inflation by any Council would have to be agreed by local people in a local referendum.
Derek Brownlee MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance & Sustainable Growth, said:
"We have already made it clear that, unlike Labour, the Scottish Conservatives will not support any increase in Council Tax in Scotland next year. We are proud to have helped deliver a freeze in the last 3 years, and we want that extended in this year's budget as well.
"But we want to go further and help hard-pressed families for longer. The freeze must continue for 2012/13 and we will not back any move to increase Council Tax in the first budget after the Holyrood elections.
"Someday, the freeze will end and that is why we are proposing that any future increase above inflation by any Council would have to be agreed by local people in a local referendum.
"Once again, it is the Scottish Conservatives who are delivering for Scotland."
