With the severe weather over the Christmas period seeing many retailers suffer a hit to their sales, Scottish Conservatives have called for Council parking charges to be suspended in January to encourage people back to the high street.
Jackson Carlaw MSP, Shadow Minister for Transport, said:
"With the recent severe weather causing many to stay at home, retailers have seen a worrying slump in their sales. While larger stores such as John Lewis saw losses as much as £5m as stores had to be closed, local high streets were also adversely affected.
"That is why Scottish Conservatives are suggesting that Council parking charges should be suspended for the month of January. Money lost in charges would be more than made up in increased sales as shoppers are encouraged return to the high streets.
"With economic conditions already set to be tough for many businesses in 2011 it is right that we get retailers off to a good start in the New Year."
