Audit Scotland has published its report into Scotland's criminal justice system, and whilst it highlights inefficiencies in the system it also points out the high cost of offender re-offending.
John Lamont MSP, Scottish Conservative justice spokesman says:
"This report underlines yet again that much more could be done to streamline Scotland's criminal justice system and much more has to be done to rehabilitate prisoners.
"It is little wonder that those going to jail often re-offend on release. There first jail sentence is all too often after they have already become repeat offenders and been given community sentences or fines.
"So much crime is fuelled by drugs and that is why we must invest in meaningful programmes to get addicts clean. That work could and should start in jail, and extend far beyond merely parking inmates on methadone."
