ScotCen survey is another nail in the coffin for independence

New figures from ScotCen's Scottish Social Attitudes survey (SSA) show that "dissatisfaction with how well Scotland does from the Union" has fallen, while support for independence remains low.

Murdo Fraser MSP, Scottish Conservative Deputy Leader, said:

"This is another nail in the coffin of Alex Salmond's and the SNP's obsession with independence. In June, Alex Salmond admitted that his independence was 'not the centre of gravity' and it is clear from these findings that the vast majority of Scots feel the same way. He is the first nationalist to get into government and take independence off the agenda.

"The latest opinion polls confirm that support for independence is at an all time low and support for Scotland as part of Britain is at an all time high. Devolution is the settled will of the Scottish people. Election after election and poll after poll tells us so. So, as shown with the publication of the new Scotland Bill this week, let's get on with creating a strong and secure Scotland within a strong and secure United Kingdom.

"The SNP Government has broken promises on student debt, class sizes, PE, Local Income Tax, Home Buyers Grant and health checks for 40 year olds, to name but a few. The minority aim of independence is of no interest to the huge majority of Scots, so people will now be wondering what exactly is the point of the SNP?"

In 2000, 42% felt that England's economy benefited more from the Union. By 2010, this figure had almost halved to 23%. Over the same period, the proportion who believe Scotland's economy comes off better increased from 16% to 26%. In 2010, 45% think both countries benefit equally.
