Speaking after FMQs today, Annabel Goldie MSP, Scottish Conservative Leader, said:
"Yesterday the First Minister told us that we must move away from the European model of deficit driven states. Of course the European states with the biggest deficit problems are in the Eurozone – their currency is the Euro. Nothing is more fundamental to a country than its currency, yet Alex Salmond refuses to say whether a separate Scotland will stick with the British pound, or join the Euro?
"We know that Alex Salmond has always favoured the Euro, so why does he not come clean? Why the cover-up?
"He can't go on ducking questions on separation forever – he must come clean and tell us his plans for a separate Scotland."
In two separate interviews with media outlets in Spain in 2009, Alex Salmond said:
i) "As you know, we're in Sterling and Sterling is sinking like a stone. It's now about at parity with the Euro."
ii) "We need also in my view to be in a framework for monetary policy, a European framework, which we're not in at the present moment, to have the best chances."
