The UK Government has announced that athletes competing in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will not have to pay income tax. The exemption will make it more likely that star athletes such as Usain Bolt will compete in the games.
Scottish Conservative leader and Glasgow MSP, Ruth Davidson said:
"To have the best games possible we need the brightest stars and biggest names competing in Glasgow.
"We have already seen Diamond League athletics meets in London suffer because of absences from stars like Usain Bolt due to tax reasons.
"I have spoken directly to the Chancellor, George Osborne, several times making the case for Glasgow's games and am delighted he has delivered for Scotland.
"I look forward to seeing some of the world's greatest athletes competing on Scottish soil in two years' time."
