A ComRes survey for BBC's Newsnight and Radio 4's World at One has found that almost half – 48% - of people in England want Scotland to remain in the United Kingdom.
David McLetchie MSP, Scottish Conservative Chief Whip, said:
"This poll shows that support for a United Kingdom literally runs right across the whole country, despite the SNP's best efforts to stir up resentment. That is because people recognise and value the social, economic and historic ties which bind our families and communities and which have crossed borders for over three centuries.
"When the SNP's separation referendum comes, we will make a positive case for the Union and welcome support from the rest of the UK for keeping us together."
