Perthshire Conservatives welcome Strathearn title for Prince William

Perthshire Conservatives are welcoming the Queen's decision to create Prince William Earl of Strathearn.

He will also take the titles Duke of Cambridge and Baron Carrickfergus.

Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative Candidate for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, said:

"The Earldom of Strathearn has played its part in our country's rich and colourful history – from being one of Scotland's most powerful families in the mid-12th century, to father and son taking different sides during the Anglo-Scottish wars in the early 14th century, to being adopted as a Royal title during the rise of the Stewarts some years later.

"I am delighted that the title is to be revived by the Queen and that Prince William, a hard-working and popular member of the Royal Family, is the beneficiary. He has a special connection with Scotland through St Andrews and now he will have special ties to Perthshire as well.

"The title will mean a welcome exposure for Perthshire all over the world and we hope it will also mean a boost to local tourism. On the day Scottish Conservatives unveiled a strategy to grow tourism across the whole country, I am delighted that we can play a role here in Strathearn and Perthshire."
