In an effort to kick the debate on Scottish Water into the long grass, the SNP Government has today published 'Building a Hydro Nation'.
The report examines how 'Scotland, in particular Scottish Water, as a publicly-owned utility, can better exploit its expertise, assets and Scotland's water resources for the continuing benefit of water customers, the environment and the wider Scottish economy'.
Derek Brownlee MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance & Sustainable Growth, said:
"People will see straight through this attempt to kick the debate into the long grass. We all know Scottish Water will have to be mutualised, if it is to realise its potential and generate the best possible deal for the Scottish taxpayer. We know it, the SNP know it and Scottish Labour know it.
"Successive Scottish Governments have already spent £1bn of taxpayers' money on Scottish Water. The SNP has a golden opportunity to save taxpayers over £140m a year and generate a one off windfall for taxpayers. It can do that and still keep Scottish Water publicly owned as the Scottish Conservatives have consistently argued."
Ruth: "Our thoughts should now be with the families of the victims who died on that fateful day in December 1988."
