Parole Board Report shows SNP creating even softer touch Scotland

Today the Parole Board of Scotland Annual Report 2009-10 was published today, revealing that 85 extended service prisoners had to be recalled to custody in order 'to protect the public from serious harm'.

John Lamont MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Justice said:

"It is vital that the SNP is not allowed to create an even softer touch Scotland by granting parole to those who end up breaching their licences and are patently not fit to be released in the first place.

"What I find staggering is that after three and a half years of this SNP Government they have still taken no action towards ending automatic early release – protecting our communities must be our first priority and scrapping this scheme should be the first step. If there is no early release there is no parole.

"What this report also goes to show is that what some people might assume a life sentence to be is often shorter than you would expect."
