Over 1.6 million school days lost to truancy

The annual summary statistics for schools in Scotland has been published. They show that truancy levels in schools have risen by more than 50%.

This means they are now at their highest levels since the SNP came to power, with over 1.6 million school days missed thanks to truancy.

Scottish Conservative Education Spokesperson, Liz Smith MSP said:

"These figures are deeply worrying and show that the SNP are not doing enough to tackle the problem of truancy. Across Scotland parents will expect urgent action so they can rest assured knowing that their child is at school where they belong.

"With over a 1.6 million school days being lost to truancy every year we cannot afford any delay, these pupils are missing out on vital days of education and they must not be allowed to fall behind.

"Although there is undoubtedly an expectation on parents to ensure their child attends school we need to be able to give them as much help as possible."
