The EU Fisheries Council meeting has concluded this morning.
John Scott MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs & the Environment, said:
"UK and Scottish ministers have done well to secure a reasonable deal for the Scottish fleet in light of the extreme constraints placed upon them by the European Commission, with the quotas for megrim and west coast monkfish being especially welcome. By contrast, the large cut in west coast nephrops is a bitter blow considering the huge importance of this stock to Scottish vessels.
"The ongoing problems being created by Iceland and the Faroes Islands are also regrettable, and it is important that the EU takes a very tough stance.
"Ultimately however, a truly sustainable deal for Scotland's fishermen will only come about once we get a full scale overhaul of the Common Fisheries Policy, with a radical increase in local and regional management. This cannot happen soon enough."
Ruth: "Our thoughts should now be with the families of the victims who died on that fateful day in December 1988."
