One in five schools in poor or bad shape – SNP’s lack of clarity is restricting potential finance sources

The latest school estate figures show that 21% of schools are in either a ‘poor' or ‘bad' condition.

Liz Smith MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education & Lifelong Learning, said:

"Scottish Conservatives welcome any progress on school building but the fact is that one in five is still either in ‘poor' or ‘bad' condition. There is an obvious concern and parents will want politicians to address it as a matter of urgency.

"The SNP Government has shown a lack of clarity on the criteria that decides which schools merit a new building. The SFT has been sold as the only alternative that is on offer for the school building agenda, despite the fact that many PFI and PPP contracts have a well proven record. This greatly restricts potential sources of finance.

"We must strive for best value for taxpayers' money when it comes to delivering top-class education for our children. They deserve better."
