Obesity related deaths: We need healthy mindsets from an early age

Figures released today show that obesity related deaths have gone up by over 40% since 2004.

Murdo Fraser MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, said:

"These alarming figures are a cause for serious concern. Unless we take steps to change the culture and instil a healthy mindset at an early age, it will not get any better. That is why we will continue to urge the SNP to mend its broken promise over PE in schools. They pledged 2 hours for every child, every week and it's time they delivered.

"Regarding younger children, Scottish Conservatives are committed to direct £20 million from the health budget towards providing more and better support for new parents through a massive increase in home health visiting services.

"Children deserve a decent start in life, so a guaranteed level of support will be offered to mothers until their child reaches the age of five. Health Visitors can give the advice and encouragement which could make all the difference in fighting obesity – a war we must win."
