New police service lacks accountability

It was announced today that the new Police Service of Scotland is due to begin operating from April 2013. The new service represents the amalgamation of Scotland's eight forces, the Scottish Police Services Authority and the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency.

Scottish Conservative Chief Whip, John Lamont MSP said:

"While it is undoubtedly welcome news that the change to a new single police force will be implemented quickly, there are still major concerns regarding the accountability provisions for this new force. With local police boards being abolished, there are concerns that there will be no real accountability.

"The boards are being replaced by talking shop committees whereby Police Commanders will merely tell Councillors what they are doing, instead of allowing direct scrutiny. This is clearly not adequate and that is why Scottish Conservatives have repeatedly called for locally elected Police Commissioners.

"These Commissioners would be responsible for overseeing the delivery and performance of the police service in their area, while also providing a vital link with the local community and engaging them in making Scotland safer."
