McLetchie: Time to suspend Single Seller Survey in Home Reports

David McLetchie MSP, Scottish Conservative Chief Whip, is calling on the Scottish Government to suspend the requirement for a Single Seller Survey and Valuation which is the key feature of Home Reports.

This is in light of the latest evidence from the Law Society of Scotland, which says the requirement is having a negative impact on the housing market and causing problems for both sellers and buyers.

David McLetchie MSP said:

"Scottish Conservatives said that the Single Seller Survey was a waste of time and money from the moment it was conceived by the previous Labour/Lib Dem Scottish Executive. The SNP Government pressed ahead with their introduction, but it is now time for a rethink.

"The Law Society evidence demonstrates that Home Reports have not abolished multiple surveys. Indeed in some cases more surveys are being commissioned now than was previously the case.

"Sellers are holding beauty parades of surveyors to achieve the highest possible Home Report valuations and purchasers are finding that the lenders will not accept these valuations and insisting that others be obtained.

"The Law Society evidence demolishes the case for Home Reports. There needs to be a wholesale review but as an interim measure the Scottish Government should suspend the single survey element which is causing most of the problems and is the major part of the cost."
