Lamont welcomes 1100 more police officers since 2007: Challenge of Labour’s debt legacy is to protect police numbers

Figures today show more than 1,100 police officers have been recruited in Scotland since 2007.

The target of 1000 extra police was set in the 2008 budget by the Scottish Government as a concession to the Scottish Conservatives.

John Lamont MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Justice, said:

"These figures are pleasing and reflect the concession made by the SNP Government to the Scottish Conservatives in recent budgets. It certainly is encouraging progress, especially as the Scottish Liberal Democrats voted against the measure and Scottish Labour didn't promise any new police officers in their last manifesto.

"We all know that Labour's massive debt legacy means savings are inevitable. But our police forces must look at all the options before them and we would urge the protection of police numbers at all costs. We will do all we can to help our dedicated police forces weather the storm."
