Lamont: Terrifying attack is proof we need tougher measures against sex offenders

Today's Scottish Sun reports that a man who was released from prison despite threatening to kill a child has been convicted of molesting a ten year old boy.

John Lamont, Scottish Conservative Justice Spokesperson, said:

"This terrifying ordeal is further proof that merely placing somebody on the sex offenders register is not enough. The current measures in place need to be far more robust.

"Under pressure from the Scottish Conservatives in 2009, the Scottish Government last year adopted a pilot scheme whereby parents can check with police if someone close to their children has a history of child sex offending. This has now been rolled out across Scotland.

"But we can do more. This man threatened to kill a child and was still released from prison, which is hugely worrying. We completely back the Association of Chief Police Officers in their push to have sex offenders locked up indefinitely until experts no longer consider them a risk.

"We are pushing for these measures because protecting our communities from these vile and abhorrent people must be our priority. We have to do everything within our power to reduce the risk they pose to our children."
