Lamont: Tackling sectarianism welcome but reforms must not be rushed

The Scottish Government has published its proposals for legislation to tackle sectarianism related to football, amid concerns that these reforms could be rushed through too quickly.

John Lamont MSP, Scottish Conservative Justice Spokesman, said:

"We all want to tackle sectarianism and it is right that the Scottish Government looks to strengthen laws on hatred in our football grounds and on the internet. We are fully supportive of this move.

"Whilst it is right to make progress, the priority must be to get the new laws right, not merely rushed. They must be properly debated and scrutinised. No one wins if we rush to get things wrong, rather than take a little bit longer to get them right.

"Annabel Goldie has spoken with the Home Office to discuss whether more can and should be done to clamp down on websites which allow the language of hate to be posted. That dialogue will continue as we search every practical route to reach our goal of a Scotland which stands up as one against sectarianism."
