Higher education funding: SNP must stop hoodwinking students

At the SNP manifesto launch today, Alex Salmond said it was possible to maintain student numbers and still offer 'free' higher education.

Liz Smith, Scottish Conservative Education Spokesperson, said:

"This just simply does not add up. Alex Salmond and the SNP have got to stop trying to hoodwink students.

"Today, they are repeating the same nonsense as before. The SNP's pretence that the taxpayer alone can fill the University funding black hole is deceitful, misleading and a distortion of the truth.

"The SNP should know better than anyone not to make rash pre-election promises to students, given their 2007 pledge to 'dump the debt'.

"The SNP and other parties need to look students in the eye and explain why they are putting our Universities at risk, compromising higher education standards and leaving thousands of Scottish students at risk of having no University place at all.

"Alex Salmond needs to wake up and face the facts. The black hole in his sums is growing, and his solutions only make it worse. Yet again, his fantasy economics have been found out."
