A new YouGov poll shows that more people across the UK oppose minimum pricing than support it, and three-quarters believe a minimum price would have no effect on their alcohol intake.
Murdo Fraser MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, says:
"This is the latest blow to the SNP's policy of blanket minimum pricing. It is clear that the public do not support these plans and perhaps most significantly, the vast majority believe it would make no difference at all to their alcohol consumption. The SNP's proposal would penalise responsible drinkers, harm the Scotch whisky industry, cost jobs and is probably illegal.
"We want to see a floor price set for alcohol, coupled with targeted duty increases, and we back a ban on irresponsible supermarket promotions. Together these plans will tackle the heavy discounting of alcohol by retailers, and unlike minimum unit pricing there is no doubt as to their legality.
"Last week's CEBR report discredited the SNP's plans and this week the people have spoken clearly. How many more times before the SNP drops its obsession with blanket minimum pricing and finally admits defeat?"
Below is the link to the YouGov poll, showing that 47% of people would not support minimum pricing and 76% believing the plans would have no effect on their alcohol intake (p.3 of the poll)
