Fraser: Panama whisky deal another boost for Scotland abroad

The Scotch Whisky industry has been handed another boost after an agreement was signed with Panama – Scotch whisky's 20th largest export market – meaning only whisky produced in Scotland can be marketed as Scotch.

It follows the massive boost handed by the UK Government to the Scotch Whisky industry, by signing a similar agreement with Chinese officials earlier this month.

Murdo Fraser MSP, Scottish Conservative Deputy Leader, said:

"I congratulate the Scotch Whisky Association for its successful application, with help from the British Embassy in Panama. This is a very welcome move and it is good to see the UK Government standing up for Scottish interests abroad.

"The Scotch Whisky industry is an essential part of Scotland's economy and image across the world and it needs to be backed to the hilt.

"This good news comes on top of the SNP's plans for indiscriminate blanket minimum pricing, which would have hugely damaged the Scotch Whisky industry, finally being thrown out by the Scottish Parliament. The UK Government has taken another practical step to protect Scotch Whisky and Scottish Conservatives will continue to do all we can to support such an iconic product."
