Scottish Labour's Alcohol Commission has reported back today.
Murdo Fraser MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, says:
"This report is a mixed bag. The Commission is right to identify that there is no 'silver bullet' to cure Scotland's problem of alcohol over-consumption, and that a change of culture is required.
"We agree with proposals to make 'Challenge 25' mandatory, to end irresponsible promotions, to bring in a ban on sales below cost price. The review of duty is of course already taking place.
"In some areas however we think report goes too far, such as full separation of alcohol from other products in supermarkets and an end to alcohol being served at public receptions. In addition, a ban on alcohol sponsorship of sporting events would be devastating in the current economic climate, and could actually be counter-productive.
"We all want to see a Scotland where alcohol is a product which can be enjoyed harmlessly if taken in moderation. The focus should be on tackling abuse and excessive and harmful consumption - this report does not strike the right balance in that respect."
