Fraser: Clear benefits from giving GPs a stronger commissioning role

BMA Scotland's conference today has agreed that models of commissioning should be explored.

Murdo Fraser MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, said:

"There would be clear benefits from giving GPs a stronger commissioning role. It would ensure that the health and care services are provided effectively and would meet the needs of individual patients.

"We want decisions will be made closer to patients. Tiers of management need to be reduced. Power must be more in the hands of patients and GP commissioning could be an essential component of that aim.

"We welcome the BMA's move in that direction – the challenge now is to agree a solution that best serves patients and allows GPs to give the best possible care."
