Fiscal independence: Letter further undermines Salmond’s contentious claims

Six economists have written to The Scotsman newspaper stating there is "a lot wrong" with academic evidence that Alex Salmond has used to press the case for full economic powers for an independent Scotland.

David McLetchie MSP, Scottish Conservative Chief Whip, said:

"This shows the SNP's assertion that more powers are going to mean more growth is based on extremely shaky foundations.

""Alex Salmond is doubly guilty as he and his party have relied on this highly contentious research, exaggerating the evidence out of all proportion in his SNP conference speech.

"He has spent the last few years arguing for fiscal independence. Now the very foundations of that case have been completely undermined."
