Essential that we get to grips with under qualified school leavers

A report by orbit Communications has found that 41% of employers recruiting straight from secondary school found their new recruits were not either well or very well prepared to start work.

This is in comparison to only 22% of employers who recruited from university who found such employees to not be either well or very well prepared for work

Scottish Conservative Education Spokesperson Liz Smith MSP, said:

"We have consistently called for there to be a greater focus on the 3Rs in our schools. It is very important that all our youngsters, whether they are going to college, university or straight into the world of work, are properly schooled in the basic skills.

"While we are hoping for improvements that should result from the Curriculum for Excellence we keep hearing statistics which suggest that far too many young people are leaving school without the appropriate qualifications and work ethic which are required throughout their working career.

"With one in six pupils leaving school without the ability to read, write or count properly it is essential that we get to grips with this problem as soon as possible."
