Energy: SNP must clear up renewables pledge confusion

Speaking as the Scottish Parliament debated 'Green Energy' today, Jackson Carlaw MSP said:

"There is one question which the SNP Government must clear up right now – does it already have the powers in place to deliver on its renewables pledge, which was such a centrepiece of the recent election campaign?

"If there is any doubt, then not only was it misleading to trumpet this policy during the election when it was by no means certain it could be delivered – hardly a first for the SNP – but it is also irresponsible to rule out nuclear power as part of a balanced energy mix.

"The Wood Mackenzie report for the Scottish Government in 2009 confirmed that the scheduled closure of Hunterston B and Torness means Scotland will lose a significant volume of low-carbon power, to say nothing of energy security.

"To prevent this the SNP Government needs to set aside its own prejudice and accept the best solution for the country is the one it currently opposes."

The SNP 2011 manifesto said: "We will increase our renewables target to 100% by 2020"
